Printable workbook: 22-page PDF with daily checklists, a blank shot list, stall-fixes, and tear-out templates. Phone only. One public URL by Sunday.
Download Start Your First Vlog in 7 Days (PDF)
Done is a public URL. Not a perfect video. Not a channel trailer. Not a logo.
If you have a phone and you have not uploaded, this is the week. You do not need a new camera, a niche manifesto, or a free evening that never comes. You need seven jobs and a Sunday with a link.
The whole path — what a vlog is, camera fear, gear, film, edit, upload — lives in How to Start a Vlog. That page taught the path. This page is the week. If you already have footage, skip to Day 4. If you already have a sentence, skip to Day 2.
A first vlog is a draft, not a debut. Target 6–10 minutes. Under 4 feels unfinished. Over 15 is an editing problem.
The printable kit with checklists and a blank shot list is ready — download the workbook. Do not wait to print it. The week does not start when a PDF arrives.
The week
- Niche. One sentence that says what the vlog is.
- Gear. Phone charged, 1080p locked, a 60-second clip on the roll.
- Film. Open, three beats, close. Footage in one folder.
- Edit. Six cuts. Export 1080p.
- Upload. A title a stranger understands. Public URL.
- Promote. Three humans have the link.
- Stay. A note for video 2. One vlog a week.
Protect the upload day like a class.
Day 1 — One sentence, not a brand
Job today: Decide the life you can film on a Tuesday. Write one sentence.
If you cannot film it on a normal week, it is a fantasy channel. Those die on day four.
List three circles. The vlog lives where they overlap.
- Access. What you already do every week — rooms, work, people who said yes, places a camera is allowed.
- Stamina. What you will still care about in 90 days. Not tonight’s mood.
- Curiosity. What a stranger would click. A situation, not “my life.”
Fails access → you will fake it. Fails stamina → you quit around video 4. Fails curiosity → you film into a void.
Circle one item in each list that can be the same story. That is the lane. Daily life is the lowest barrier — add a constraint (new city, new job, one skill, first month in a new apartment). Travel only if you actually travel. Family needs consent first. Business is the work, not a pitch. Hobby or food only if you already do it.
Interesting is specific, not impressive. Write it in speech:
My vlog is me, doing ______________, for people who ______________.
Steal the shape: a new apartment for people who just moved; a shop in real time for people who want the work; one grocery bag for people tired of wasting food.
If it sounds like a slogan, rewrite it until it sounds like a text to a friend. Put it in a note titled vlog-001.
Stall fix: Pick a constraint and write it ugly. You can rewrite it on Day 3. You cannot rewrite a blank. If four lanes feel right, pick the one you can film this week without asking permission.
Done looks like: the sentence exists in the note.
Day 2 — The phone is the kit
Job today: Make the phone ready. Press record for 60 seconds. Do not watch it.
Buying a camera to feel ready is how people delay six months. Can You Vlog With Your Phone? is the longer yes. What Equipment Do You Need to Vlog? is the full list. You do not need the full list tonight.
The kit is the phone, a notes app, a window or a lamp, a quiet hour or wired earbuds, and a stack of books at eye height if you want it.
Charge it. Free about 10GB. Lock 1080p / 30fps. Grid on. On an iPhone, tap and hold on your face to lock exposure. On Android, tap the face and drop exposure a notch if you can. Face the window. If you look like a silhouette, turn around. Phone horizontal. Do Not Disturb on. Do not open a camera review.
Then the drill. One specific person — a friend, a sibling, last year’s you. Not “hey guys.” Talk for 60 seconds about your actual day. Hit stop. Keep the clip. If the letter feels fake, narrate coffee or a box instead.
The fear is lack of reps. You do not fix it with a nicer microphone. The longer talking lesson is How to Talk Naturally on Camera. Do the 60 seconds first.
Stall fix: Say one name first. “Hey Maya. I moved six days ago and the kitchen is still a pile.” That is a take. If you watch the clip and spiral, put the phone down. Watching it tonight is how people skip Day 3.
Done looks like: a 60-second clip is on the roll, and the phone can record for an hour.
Day 3 — Film the shape
Job today: Write the shape, then film it. Open, three beats, close. Home first.
Without a shape, today is 22 minutes of nothing. Write it in vlog-001 before you hit record. How to Film Yourself is the longer shoot.
- Open (15–30s): who you are, what today is, why we should stay. Not “hey guys, welcome back” on a channel with no videos.
- Three beats: three places, tasks, or moments. Not twelve.
- Close (20s): what happened, what is next, one question or nothing. No triple thank-you. No apology.
If you write a fourth beat, cross it out. Fourth beats are how first vlogs become 18 minutes and never export.
Steal the apartment-week shape. Open: you moved six days ago and you are turning boxes into a kitchen. Beat 1: stock the kitchen. Beat 2: build the one piece of furniture blocking the room. Beat 3: a simple meal and a block walk. Close: the shelf is up, the pasta was fine, you still do not know the neighborhood. Same skeleton for a Saturday or a work week.
A-roll is your face and voice. Eyes near the top third. Phone slightly off-center, not under the chin. Talk in 20–40 second chunks. Two takes of the open. One short stand-up per beat. If you blank, narrate what you are doing.
B-roll is the thing, not your face — thing, hands, place, result. Five clips per beat, about ten seconds each. You will use three.
First vlog can be 80 percent indoors. Write the out-of-house beat before you leave. A store run, then home, is a plan. Wandering is sidewalk with no open. Stop when the list is covered. Put every clip in one album named vlog-001.
Stall fix: Dread going out? Film all three beats at home. Sidewalk and no open? Film the open in the stairwell before you quit. No three beats? Circle three things from the Day 1 access list. If the list is covered, stop.
Done looks like: footage is in one folder or album.
Day 4 — Six cuts, then export
Job today: Dead air out, B-roll in, export 1080p. This is not color grading.
How to Edit a Vlog is the full path. Tonight is six cuts. Default: CapCut on the phone or desktop. Do not buy software. If you already have Premiere, Final Cut, or Resolve, use it. Phone edit is allowed.
Dummy export first if you have never exported: one clip, one cut, 30 seconds. Confirm it plays. Then the real project. A-roll on the first track: open → beat 1 → beat 2 → beat 3 → close. Then, in order:
- Cut the pre-roll. “Wait is it on.” The first two seconds of every take.
- Cut the um-chains that do not contain information. One “um” inside a real sentence can stay.
- Cut the second take of the same sentence. Keep the open where you meant it.
- Drop B-roll over the boring half of a walking shot. Keep your voice. Three clips a beat is enough.
- Cut the ending that thanks the audience three times. If you apologized, cut the apology.
- Stop. Do not recut the open at 12:40 a.m.
If you only do 1, 3, and 6, the video is already better than most first uploads.
Music quieter than you think. Editor library or a licensed source — not a chart song. Text optional: “Day 6.” “Still no cutting board.” Export 1080p, matching 24 or 30 fps. File name: vlog-001-short-title.mp4. Watch once on mute, once with sound. Fix only the wince. Export again. The third watch is how people never upload.
Stall fix: Midnight and still trimming? You are past cut 6. Export the rough 8-minute file. Timeline is 18 minutes? Cut a beat. Do not add music to hide it. Editor feels new? Cuts 1, 3, and 6 only. Skip music.
Done looks like: the file exists.
Day 5 — Upload it
Job today: Title, thumbnail, two-line description, public URL.
The vlog can be good and still die in a bad title.
Formula: [what happened] + [context]. Human word first.
Works: “I Tried to Film a Vlog in My Apartment for the First Time.” “First Week in a New Apartment — I Unpacked the Kitchen and Got a Desk Up.”
Does not: “Vlog #1.” “Hey guys.” A private joke. A keyword pile.
Write three. Read them out loud. Circle the one a stranger would understand without knowing you. Search it on YouTube before you lock it. If nothing similar exists, it may be too vague (“my week”). If 20 similar exist, write a clearer version, not a weirder one.
Thumbnail in 20 minutes: face + one phrase + one object. High contrast. Readable on a phone. Same shirt, same window, hold the object — or crop a still from the open. Four words. DAY 6. I MOVED. FIRST WEEK. Not a sentence.
Description: two lines in English, then two or three links. Channel only is fine. Tags optional: 3–8 real phrases, not 30 junk tags.
Unlisted for ten minutes is allowed if you need to check the file on a TV. Private-forever is not. End screens and playlists are skippable. Do not learn them tonight. Copy the URL. Do not refresh Studio.
Stall fix: Hate the thumb? Same shirt, window, 20 minutes, then stop. Title is “Vlog #1”? Use the formula. Rewriting on the upload screen? Use the circled title and upload. Titles can change later.
Done looks like: the URL is live.
Day 6 — Send the link to real people
Job today: Three texts. Share the one video, not the channel.
Early growth is people you can tell, plus a title a stranger can understand. It is not a hashtag. You will want a growth hack after video 1 sits quietly. The fix is three humans and video 2, not a new identity.
“I made this — first week in the apartment” is a message a human can answer. “I started a YouTube, you should subscribe” is a request people ignore.
The people you tell are not cheating. Every channel starts with a room. Strangers come after the title is clear and there is a second video to click. You cannot skip the room.
Do not buy subscribers. Do not spam a group with a link and a fake question.
Name three people who will actually watch. Send all three after the URL is public. If you cannot name three, name one and send it anyway. Do not wait to “see how it does.”
Stall fix: Freeze on the three texts? Send one now. The other two before bed. Do not refresh Studio between them.
Done looks like: three humans have the link. One counts if three is a wall. The URL is still public.
Day 7 — Write video 2. Keep the week.
Job today: A note for the next one while Day 3 is still fresh. Pick a day you can protect.
Same shape. Same lane. Do not invent a new channel. Write a working title, an open sentence, three beats, a close, and one thing you will do differently — one line, not a rebrand.
That note is how week two starts. One vlog a week. Daily is not a beginner plan. How Often Should You Upload? is the cadence lesson. Every other week is real if weekly is too heavy.
Video 3 is where fear comes back dressed as “maybe the niche is wrong.” The sample is too small. Stay. Film 11 before you talk about a rebrand.
Do not add a camera, a rebrand, a daily promise, or a money tab. They feel like progress. They are how the URL never happens. Most new vlogs make nothing for a long time. As of August 19, 2026, YouTube fan funding (Super Thanks, Super Chat, memberships) in eligible countries needs 500 subscribers and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Ads need 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views. You do not have that this week. Film.
Stall fix: Waiting until video 1 is better? Write the note anyway. If you skipped a day, do yesterday’s “done looks like” in twenty minutes, then today’s job. A late URL still counts.
Done looks like: the video 2 note exists, and a day is circled for the next upload.
Start the week
The next useful action is not another tab. It is Day 1: the sentence in the vlog-001 note. If you already have the sentence, skip to the drill. If you already have footage, skip to the six cuts.
Go back to How to Start a Vlog when you want the path again. First-week questions also live in Getting Started.
The printable kit is here — download the 22-page workbook for the pages you can hold when you stall. It does not teach a different method. Start Day 1 today.
Then upload. The week does not count until there is a URL.
